About the World
Many centuries ago, the elemen came to this world through an enchanted forest, fleeing their previous world for unknown reasons. Elemen are a type of human who contain an additional circulatory system in their bodies through which a substance called liquid element flows. By channeling this element, they can draw it out of their body and manipulate it at will. There are many types of elemen, and each live within their own individual city-states:
The Flame elemen of Stendrion.
The Thunder elemen of Jet City.
The Wind elemen of Gaildasia.
The Aqua elemen of Leiyata.
The Garden elemen of Kikura.
While tensions exist between each individual states, their world has gone without war for over a hundred years now.
About Ike | cw: child neglect, incestual feelings between cousins, implied domestic violence
Ike is a child who should never have been born.
His mother was a flame eleman, and his father was a thunder eleman. Although there is no taboo between such relationships, producing children is strictly forbidden. And for a very good reason: the body of an elemen is specifically designed to handle each of their given elements. Should an element they cannot handle flow through their veins, it could destroy them. And such is the fate of many mixed elemen, most dying as children as the elements in their body fight for dominance. Ike was lucky: his dominant element was lightning, which prevented the liquid flame element from taking over and burning him from the inside out.
While Ike himself would not be punished simply for what he is, his parents were forced to pay the ultimate price: his mother was publicly executed in the streets of Stendrion, and his father was forced to go on the run. As such, from the age of 4 onward, Ike was raised by a close family friend of his Uncle living in Jet City, named Muralei.
As a doctor, Muralei was perhaps the best equipped for raising a mixed child like Ike. His diet required very special attention to ensure his body wasn't capable of producing flames, he constantly needed to expel as much electric discharge as possible to build up his tolerance to his dominant element, and even with every possible precaution, he'd still produce flames and burn the tissue inside his arms and legs at least a few times a year. Thankfully, Muralei was no ordinary doctor, and specialized in a long forgotten form of soul manipulation that allowed him to channel the energy in Ike's body to heal the most severe of his wounds. This practice is referred to as "tailoring" the soul, in reality, can only be done by the long-thought-to-be-extinct Light elemen.
However, initially, Muralei resented Ike. Ike's Uncle had recently gone missing himself. And having just lost her sister, his Aunt fell into a mental breakdown that made her ill-equipped to handle the weight of caring for another child. Even so, Muralei felt as though it shouldn't have been his responsibility to care for a child he had no relation to. He treated him coldly, tending only to his basic needs and otherwise ignoring him. It wasn't until an incident when Ike was 7 that things changed. While Muralei was seeing patients, Ike produced enough flames to burn the floor around him. Not wanting to upset Muralei, he got to work scrubbing off the scorch marks, even as he lost all feeling in both arms. When Muralei finally found him, all Ike could do was apologize for damaging the floor, begging him not to leave like his parents did. It was an incident that made Muralei realize that he truly was all that Ike had left in the world.
After that, their relationship became more like that of father and son, with Muralei opening a private clinic in his home, specifically so he can spend more time with Ike between patients. When Ike was 11, he met his cousin Lunia again for the first time since he was a child. At just 13 years old, she was already drafted in Stendrion's military. While it guaranteed a life of servitude towards the city of Stendrion, it also afforded her the freedom to travel, allowing her to make up for all the years they spent living apart.
Two years his senior, Ike was absolutely enamored with Lunia. Spending their childhood apart made it difficult to see her as family, and those feelings became something more twisted. When he was 13, he confessed to her that he was in love with her -- a fact that so disturbed her, she immediately returned to Stendrion. Her visits thereafter became more sporadic, and due to the rigid nature of Stendrion's military culture, Lunia began to change. Although she retained her spontaneous and out-going nature, she became far more bitter with the world, inevitably driving a rift between then two. Although they never spoke about it, by the time Ike was 15, he had completely lost his feelings for her.
At 16, Ike began looking for ways to become more self-sufficient. He took on a job managing the lightning towers that surround Jet City -- necessary structures, given the sheer amount of lightning storms produced by having so many thunder elemen living in one place. It was here where he met Jack, and was quickly drawn to his extroverted personality. The two soon entered a tumultuous relationship, only for Jack to violently break up with him upon learning of his status as a mixed eleman.
Ike was traumatized by this incident, his general skittishness growing worse, and manifesting as severe self-loathing. Even a year later, he hadn't really improved, refusing to open up to Muralei about what happened. Up until now, Lunia had been wrapped up in her own problems. But upon hearing through the grapevine that Ike's identity had been outed, she made her way to Jet City to help Ike.
